Top ten games: file sharers keep reaching for old favorites over new hits

The ten most popular games in 2017 among file sharers worldwide are ones that have been on the shelves for years, rather than new releases! Four of the top ranking games were even released before 2004 and not a single game was released in 2016 or 2017.

SIMS 4: LONG TIME FAVORITE AMONG FILE SHARERS

From early 2017 until the end of May, the life-simulation video game “Sims 4” successfully defended its top spot against all other games with its 16.7 million P2P users.

Although it couldn’t quite knock out the Sims, the action-adventure series “Grand Theft Auto” also made an impressive showing on the chart. The franchise contributed three different storylines to the top ten games. Surprisingly, the older games in the series are still more popular among file sharers – or at least comparatively so – than the latest iteration, 2014’s best remastered game*, “Grand Theft Auto V”. The first installment of the GTA franchise, for example, which was released in 1997 for PC, ranked No. 7 on the worldwide list of top games with an impressive nearly 9.5 million file sharers by the end of May 2017! “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” which came out in 2004, is still the most popular of the series this year and ranks second worldwide with more than 14.1 million file sharers.

TOP RANKINGS DOMINATED BY GAME FRANCHISES

Minecraft, another franchise powered by more than 10 million fans, ranked fifth among the most popular games worldwide. The open-world game and NAVGTR’s 2011 “Game of the Year”** winner has been showing boundless popularity. According to IGN, it is the best-selling game of all time with 122 million copies and over 55 million players every single month!***

Another nostalgic favorite, Valve’s multiplayer shooter showed up with “Counter-Strike: Global Offense” and “Counter-Strike 1.6” at spots 3 and 10, respectively.

The first installment of “Pro Evolution Soccer” – released in 2001 – performed very well with more than 8.1 million file sharers this year. According to our data, it has even outranked the latest installment, “Pro Evolution Soccer 2017,” which was released in 2016 and only made it to spot 11 of the worldwide most popular games. None of the other versions of this game have made it into the top 25 this year yet.

Last but not least, the indie-shooter game “Waves” ranked ninth, by firing up over 7 million P2P users worldwide.
