The center-stage spots in our previous quarterly update were snatched up by a number of famous music artists who demonstrated consistent popularity over a longer period of time. During the second quarter, the charts were stormed by yet another music artist: hip-hop superstar Kendrick Lamar. His success in both April and May landed him spot 1 among the world’s most trending music artists, which have had a sustainable impact on the quarterly charts. Thanks to a large swath of loyal fans over the past three months, Kendrick Lamar shot up from spot 34 in Q1 to the coveted spot at the very top of the Q2 charts. But how have other trending music artists performed over the last few months? And have there been any significant changes among the lower ranks?
TRENDING MUSIC ARTISTS ACKNOWLEDGED FOR SUSTAINED FILE SHARING GROWTH
Due to their sustainable growth in popularity among file sharers, the American electro-pop duo The Chainsmokers earned their rightful top spot in the charts for the most trending music artists in the second quarter of 2017. Although they dropped down from spot 6 in April to 14 in May – and eventually to spot 18 in June – The Chainsmokers have demonstrated real and consistent popularity over a longer stretch of time. Because of this stable file sharing activity, they landed spot 10 for Q2.

TRENDING MUSIC ARTISTS AMONG THE LOWER RANKS GENERATE HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR THE UPCOMING QUARTER
Although the alternative virtual rock band Gorillaz hadn’t released an album since 2010, their latest album “Humanz” guaranteed them an impressive spot among the world’s trending music artists. The band quickly climbed up the charts to spot 6 in May but fell back to spot 15 in June. They managed to reach spot 11 for the last quarter after not appearing among the top 100 over the six months before.

Things weren’t so different for the rock band Deep Purple, who dropped an album in April and maintained stable file sharing activity during the following two months. In stark contrast to the previous quarter, Deep Purple moved up 24 ranks, landing them spot 14 for Q2.

LOWER RANKS REVEAL TRENDING NEWCOMERS, BUT ALSO WANING POPULARITY FOR SOME MUSIC ARTISTS
We saw a lot of familiar faces below the top 15 chart during Q1/2017, such as Rihanna, Bruno Mars and The Beatles. That said, some of the ranks were handed over to new trending music artists, who successfully landed spots among the top 50. To the surprise of many, the French hip-hop artist Lacrim – who was first time seen in the charts for April – managed to secure himself a solid spot. With 849,527 P2P users sharing his French rap music in the second quarter, Lacrim earned spot 22, smack dab between Future (spot 21) and Queen (spot 23).
Although we met some new trending music artists, others slightly stepped back out of the limelight. BrvndonP, for example, dropped 25 ranks to spot 40 from the end of Q1/2017 and is expected to be on his way out of the top 50 chart over the next three months.
