Who is the most popular artist heating up the summer file sharing charts and winning over the most f

It’s summertime, which means earworms from the world’s most popular artists are eating up the charts. This month’s top list showed movement within the rankings of top international performers; however, the usual suspects stubbornly held onto the upper rungs. But is Ed Sheeran still sitting pretty at the top? And who is the most popular artist responsible for unseating pop’s favorite redhead in July?

JAY-Z SOAKED UP A WIN ON THE CHARTS, WHILE OTHER POPULAR ARTISTS STARTED TO WILT

First things first: Who reigns supreme as July’s most popular artist? American producer and businessman Jay-Z skyrocketed to the very top fueled by the release of his latest album “4:44” at the end of June. He rode this high demand for his music all the way to the top spot by the end of this month as well. June’s top 3 music artists Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar and Drake slid down a few ranks, but stubbornly stayed among the top 5 of the charts.

Looking at other sections of the list, artists who have occupied top spots since the beginning of the year, such as Major Lazer, Metallica or Armin van Buuren, slowly started to lose popularity among P2P users. The Dutch DJ and record producer Armin van Buuren for example, even dropped out of the top 10 charts in July. The loss of long-time members isn’t all bad, though! Their decline just opens up free spots for new faces to prove their musical talent!

IMAGINE THE ACTIVITY WHEN IMAGINE DRAGONS RELEASED 'EVOLVE': 458,846 P2P USERS WENT CRAZY!

The American rock band Imagine Dragons brought in a high number of fans who were using P2P networks to download and share their music. The surge occurred right after their new album “Evolve” dropped on June 23, 2017. They’ve been creating quite a stir in July as well, developing persistent file sharing activity that might even push them into one of the coveted top ranks.

WHAT POPULAR MUSIC ARTISTS LIE BEYOND THE TOP 10?

DJ KHALED

Thanks to his worldwide fan base, DJ Khaled’s tenth studio album “Grateful”, which he released on June 23, 2017, brought him to spot 21 for June. Nudged forward by the 438,878 P2P users sharing his music in July, the American music artist has grabbed spot 13, just short of knocking on the door to the top 10 music artists worldwide. Maybe they’ll let him in for August?

LANA DEL REY

No stranger to our rankings, American singer-songwriter Lana del Rey has slipped back into our radar once her latest album “Lust for Life” was leaked two days ahead of schedule. With the 381,935 P2P users downloading and sharing Lana’s music on the heels of that leak, she landed at spot 16 in July.

SELENA GOMEZ

Selena Gomez, already rubbing shoulders with the top 50 crew last month, has danced her way up closer to the top. Propped up by the promotional single releases “Bar Liar” on May 18 and “Fetish” on July 13, 2017, she jumped from spot 58 in May to 50 in June and finally to 36 in July. The popularity she gained following these releases put 238,290 P2P users in her camp who shared her music in July. Given the sudden acceleration that got her into that July spot, we’ll have to keep an eye on file sharing activity once the full new album gets released, although the final date for that hasn’t been announced yet.

JUL

French rap music artist Jul released his new album “Je ne me vois pas briller” on June 30, 2017, which catapulted him from spot 97 in June to 41 in July. With a comparably low number of daily P2P users at 12,800, fans of Jul started sharing his music three days after the release, followed by a small boost after another four days passed. Jul’s music was downloaded and shared primarily in France, Algeria and Morocco. A worldwide total of 222,797 in July got him a position to join the top 50 most popular artists.

FANS CAME TOGETHER TO LIFT LINKIN PARK BACK INTO TOP 5 AFTER LEAD SINGER CHESTER BENNINGTON'S DEATH

Back in the top list, Linkin Park grabbed headlines once again – although this time with the kind of news you don’t want: the tragic death of front man Chester Bennington. Fans seemed to console themselves by listening to the band’s discography, lifting Linkin Park back onto spot 4 in Billboard Artist 100 chart, and placed another 13 titles on the top 15 of the Lyricfind US chart! This music-filled mourning period was also mirrored in file sharing charts: Almost 92,500 P2P users were downloading and sharing files of Bennington’s alt-rock band on July 21, 2017. With a total of 655,028 P2P users (Almost 70% of them for the time following the announcement of his passing), Linkin Park took second place in the charts for the most popular artists in July.

Who is the most popular artist in August? Stay tuned for the next top list due to drop in early September!
