Music file sharing in October – what’s happened so far and what are the latest trends? Last month’s chart for music downloads in September revealed that file sharer numbers remained stable, but also that the rank holders were shuffled up a bit. But which artist landed the top spot in the music file sharing charts and who else was able to crawl up a few more ranks?

At a glance, the top 10 music file sharing chart seems to have remained unchanged, with Ed Sheeran at the top and Drake and Kendrick Lamar on spots 2 and 3. The British rock band Pink Floyd raked in four spots, coming in at number 4, while electronic music DJ Armin van Buuren managed to hold onto spot 5. Linkin Park, meanwhile, ceded spot 4, slipping down two ranks. What’s noteworthy, however, is the fact that Luis Fonsi, who showed great popularity at spots 5 and 6 from June until August, started to fall in the ranks in September and October’s music file sharing charts. With the summer over and fall kicking in, demand for Luis Fonsi’s summer hit "Despacito" seems to have fallen like the leaves outside. Now he holds spot 11 – quite a decrease in popularity for someone who was on fire just a few months ago.

Furthermore, the top 50 reveal a number of artists who are on their way up, showing increasing music file sharing numbers. Marilyn Manson, Gucci Mane and Demi Lovato, for example, were among that handful of October music file sharing stars.

THOSE CLIMBING UP THE MUSIC FILE SHARING CHART IN OCTOBER

MARILYN MANSON – ‘HEAVEN UPSIDE DOWN’

After not having come out with a new album since January 2015, the American industrial metal artist Marilyn Manson stepped back into the spotlight by releasing his latest studio album “Heaven Upside Down” on October 6, 2017. Nevertheless, metalheads and goths were impatient for the release of Marilyn’s tenth studio album. As a result, the album was leaked more than two weeks ahead of schedule, as we reported through our TECXIPIO leak alert that same day. That said, music file sharing activity really picked up on September 19 and reached 23,400 P2P users after just one day. With a total of 229,556 P2P users in October, Marilyn Manson managed to reach spot 42 in our top music artist chart for the month. The highest number of fans came from Russia, followed by the U.S., the Ukraine, China and Brazil.

GUCCI MANE – ‘MR. DAVIS’

The American rap artist Gucci Mane just dropped some new beats for his fans with his album “Mr. Davis”. His eleventh studio album, which was released on October 13, 2017, and refers to his real name – Radric Delantic Davis – reeled in nearly 26,000 file sharers the day after the album was released. A total of 287,526 Gucci Mane fans downloaded and shared his music in October, resulting in spot 25 on the music file sharing chart. The most loyal Gucci Mane fans were based in the United States, followed by Canada, China, Russia and the United Kingdom.

DEMI LOVATO – ‘TELL ME YOU LOVE ME’

The pop-rock and R&B singer Demi Lovato had her debut more than nine year ago with the release of her first album “Don’t Forget” in 2008. After having come out with four more albums after her debut, Demi Lovato is finally dropping her sixth studio album “Tell Me You Love Me” on September 29, 2017. Her fans have been downloading and sharing more of her music as a result. On the day of the release, more than 21,500 P2P users actively shared her latest songs through P2P networks. The continued demand for her music has allowed Demi to climb up from spot 70 in September to 48 in October. Her most active fans were in the United States, Brazil, the Philippines, India and Canada.

CHRIS BROWN & EMINEM - BATTLING IT OUT ON THEIR RISE TOWARD TOP10!

CHRIS BROWN - 'HEARTBREAK ON A FULL MOON'

The American singer-rapper Chris Brown released his new album “Heartbreak on a Full Moon” on October 31, 2017. To promote his new album among fans, Chris Brown released the promotional singles “Pills & Automobiles” and “Questions” on August 4 and 16, 2017, respectively. On top of that, the announcement of the album’s tracklist on October 14, 2017, drove up anticipation for his new album even more. To put things in perspective, the number of P2P users who downloaded and shared Chris Brown’s music grew by 66% to 315,501 from September to October. More than 50% of the total Chris Brown fans in October came from the United States. More specifically, nine U.S. cities swooped up spots in the top 10 ranking for cities where fans were most eager for Chris Brown to release his new tunes.

Thanks to the increased music file sharing activity surrounding Chris Brown, he’s been climbing up the top 50, coming in at spot 15 for October. When his new album is released in November, we expect Chris Brown to keep up his momentum in popularity. Maybe enough to push through to the top 10?

EMINEM - 'REVIVE'

Another famous music artist is about to release a new album. Eminem – American rapper, songwriter and record producer – is at the ready with his ninth studio album “Revive.” The ongoing publicity during recent weeks has resulted in a slight uptick in music file sharing activity. Nevertheless, he managed to get close to the top 10. With a total of 311,431 file sharers, Eminem slammed spot 17. And just like we saw for Chris Brown, the most active fans downloading and sharing Eminem’s older tracks to get themselves stoked for his upcoming stuff came from the United States (more than 30%).

But who of two artists will work their way into the top 10 for the music file sharing chart in November? Or will neither of them be able to reach a top spot through their new albums?
