During the first six months of the year, an average of 4,097,806 peer-to-peer users in Russia downloaded and shared at least one file per day over peer-to-peer networks. This number is 18% higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
2 – HOW DOES THIS NUMBER SHAPE UP AGAINST WORLDWIDE P2P ACTIVITY?
14.53% of the world’s file sharers are based in Russia, making it the country with the most file sharers worldwide. The other top file sharing countries trailing it are China (10.77%), Brazil (5.77%), India (5.31%) and the United States (4.78%).

3 – WHERE DO RUSSIAN PEER-TO-PEER USERS TURN MOST OFTEN TO HOST FILES?
Torrent-client statistics reveal a diverse range of avenues through which file sharers spread files around the globe. Peer-to-peer users in Russia for example, prefer uTorrent (more than 67%). But some of their files can also be found on other notable clients like MediaGet (13%) or Zona (8%).

5 - WHAT MOVIE PREFERENCES CROP UP WHEN ANALYZING PEER-TO-PEER USERS IN RUSSIA?
The share of peer-to-peer users in Russia that use file sharing networks to download movie titles matches the worldwide average of almost 50%. When it comes to the importance of movie titles among peer-to-peer users overall, Russia pinned down the third spot. Only India and Brazil, where movies were shared by 78% and 56% of peer-to-peer users respectively, could outmatch the film cravings of Russian file sharers.
Next to Hollywood movies, Russian movies enjoy a healthy dose of popularity among peer-to-peer users in Russia. The following top titles have something in common that further sharpens the profile of Russian entertainment preferences: They all fall under the action and drama genres.

But we can’t forget that Hollywood movies are also influencing entertainment preferences in Russia. Although they do like to look across the pond for cinematic jewels, they seem to be a little bit behind the times on trending topics. Russian peer-to-peer users are evidently more inclined to reach for older movies, seeing as all top 5 movie titles were released in 2016. In contrast to the top Russian movies listed above, all of these top 5 Hollywood movies were either sci-fi or fantasy films. The fantasy movie “Assassin’s Creed”, for example, managed to attract more than 4.5 million file sharers in Russia and came in at No. 5 among the most popular Hollywood movies during the first half of 2017.

A rather high share of peer-to-peer users in Russia are interested in game titles: 35% vs. 19.4% worldwide average. The action-adventure video game series “Grand Theft Auto” and the simulator franchise “The Sims” are by far the most popular single content titles (of all content types!) among file sharers in Russia.

Sharing music files still seems to be more important to Russian peer-to-peer users than to file sharers in other countries (with the exception of the US). In total, 11% of peer-to-peer users in Russia share music files. Using the file sharing data we gathered, we can draw a few conclusions about music preferences in Russia. According to the top list, metal, rock and electronic music are more likely to be downloaded and shared, and have the highest number of fans in Russian peer-to-peer networks.

8 - WHAT ELSE DO RUSSIAN FILE SHARERS LIKE?
Compared to file sharers in other countries, such as China, Brazil, India or the United States, one fact about peer-to-peer users in Russia was clear: They’re passionate gamers. But what else have file sharers in Russia who shared one of the top 5 games also shared in peer-to-peer networks?
Since we’ve found that Russian peer-to-peer networks are full of gaming buffs, it’s not surprising that more than 50% of the peer-to-peer users who shared files of at least one of the top 5 games also shared all five titles. This underscores game content as vitally important among the entertainment preferences in Russia.
9 – WHICH CITIES IN RUSSIA HAVE THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF ACTIVE FILE SHARERS?
Based on the top 5 rankings we’ve covered so far, the highest number of peer-to-peer users in Russia was calculated in metropolitan cities such as the capital of Moscow, followed by Russia’s second-largest city (St. Petersburg) and then Krasnodar.
Almost 17% of file sharers for the top 5 Russian movies are located in one of these three major cities.
10 – WHICH ISPs ARE USED MOST BY PEER-TO-PEER USERS IN RUSSIA?
There are several Internet service providers that Russian file sharers use to download and share movies, series, music, games or e-books. According to the top 5 rankings listed above, the most commonly used ISPs are Rostelecom and JSC ER Telecom.
